Lightyear (2022) - Review

Lightyear is a solid animated film that delivers a sci-fi tale that is a tad generic. As with most Pixar films, it’s absolutely beautiful. Great landscapes, great character designs (Buzz looks bad ass), and the texture work is great, the robot cat even has high quality hair on it. The action is also really kinetic and exciting, and the voice cast does a good job as well. The first 30 minutes are pretty great, with some great emotional moments as well. But it turns out the real story happens after that, where the story is fine, if not tired territory with its comedy, character arcs and plot twists. It follows the current formula for blockbusters to the tee, and it’s a shame since the first part was so engaging and a great set-up for the rest of the story. Despite these structure problems, I still thought this was worth the watch for its better moments and sci-fi goodness.
