The Staircase (2022) - Review

This series based on the true crime event, highlights subtle direction, stellar performances and deep character writing. Michael Peterson is a such an intriguing character, as his constant lies and proud attitude create a character whose intentions you never really know, and it’s a thrill to watch. It also helps that Colin Firth plays the role amazingly, nailing the mannerisms and energy of the real life man perfectly. It’s almost frightening how accurate his portrayal is. He’s not the only one whose’s great. Supporting cast members like Michael Stuhlbarg, Dane Dehaan, Odessa Young, and the GOAT Toni Collette fill out the series with great performances and character work. Antonio Campos direction has always been subtle and understated, and his style works perfectly for this tale. The subtle atmosphere and mood he creates simultaneously puts the characters front and centre, but also guide you along visually with feelings of dread that this family deals with. The structure fo the show is scattered as we jump around in points of time, but you never lose focus on where you are in the timeline and it allows for thematic parallels to shine. The biggest weakness of the show is a character that is introduced halfway through the series that becomes a huge player to Michael’s life. Juliette Binoche does a great job with the character, but the character feels like a tool to move the story along or to help explore other characters rather than character on her own. Otherwise, this is a stellar true crime series that showcases what this genre can do best, making you engrossed in these characters lives, while questioning what their true motives are.
